University Spotlight – Alumni Edition
In this post, we talk with UNLV alumni, Phil McGovern, about his college experience.
Phil is a hard working, young stud from Las Vegas. He graduated not too long ago and knows UNLV like the back of his hand. On his free time, you can catch him working out, traveling, or inspiring the next generation.
Hope this convo gives you a better idea of UNLV, and if you’re in the process of making a decision on which school to attend, I hope this helps!
Enjoy!
How would you describe your overall experience at UNLV?
For most of us, a college experience is what we look forward to after high school. High School Seniors that are pursuing continued education after high school that are raised in Nevada, generally choose either the University of Nevada, Las Vegas or the University of Nevada, Reno. The in-state tuition is affordable and both UNLV and UNR offer a great college experience with competitive programs in all fields, especially hospitality. Being raised in Las Vegas and continuing my education in Las Vegas allowed me to save money, and continue my studies but didn’t allow me to immerse myself in the college community as much as I wanted. The overall student population is a mix of international students that travel and study at UNLV for the Hospitality program, and the other portion is athletes or in-state students, so overall the student experience could be better. There are a wealth of clubs, activities, and student groups to participate in to improve the overall college experience.
What is your favorite memory of college?
My favorite memory of college would have to be working as a student worker in the Athletic Department because it allowed me special access to all sporting events. I also was able to study abroad in Puntarenas, Costa Rica through the International Studies Department with USAC. It was a program that allowed me to stay on track in my course of study but also learn a new language
Why did you choose UNLV?
I chose UNLV because it was the most affordable option for kid coming from a big family and little savings to be able to utilize towards college
What was your major and how is it impacting your life today?
I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Comprehensive Kinesiology and a minor in Latin American Language & Culture
What do most college students like to do for fun around UNLV?
Most college students enjoy attending school sporting events, joining a fraternity or sorority and going out to nearby venues that are close to the strip.
Best bar to party for cheap?
There weren’t a bunch of bars in the area, since most students live off campus so the majority of the best parties for cheap were house parties. If they didn’t go to a house party, some of the options around town were bars in Town Square which is off campus but offer some deals for students on certain nights of the week.
Best breakfast spot to cure a hangover?
Einstein bagel in the student union was always clutch but for a cheaper option faustos, ruberto’s offered cheap breakfast burritos.
If you could do college over again, would you do anything differently?
Even though it wasn’t my thing, I would probably join a fraternity. Joining a club or group at UNLV is important because otherwise if you are a part of an athletic team, you won’t have a college experience. A fraternity allows you to participate in group events, charity work, social outings, build friend groups that will amplify your ability to not only succeed at UNLV but also be more social
What’s some advice you would give your freshman self?
I would say to let down your ego and immerse yourself in all the things you find interesting. Take the opportunity to join all types of group, apply to jobs on campus and create a routine that will help you network to build your weekly schedule so you are able to meet students with similar hobbies, interests, social groups and studies so you are able to curate a fun but productive schedule.
